This past Sunday, my congregation and I reached the ‘half-way’ point in our current message series – Fresh Start: Finding Fitness in a New Year. The series has gone well so far, and I really wanted to mark the middle by doing something a little outside the norm. In the end, I decided to stick with something a little more tried and true. However, if you listen to the audio you’ll get a small glimpse of what could have been.
I must say, this message got me thinking. As a pastor, I tend to stand by without complaint when all sorts of heinous sins are committed against our bodies…usually in the name of “fellowship.” Church life tends to include a lot of sitting around and a lot of eating, either of which necessarily contributes much to physical fitness. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was part of a congregation that dealt with these issues in a sustained fashion and then offered something to move the effort beyond talk to implementation.
What’s the most creative think you’ve seen a church do to encourage its members to exercise responsible stewardship of their bodies? What are some things you’d like to see the church do?
