My late-summer sermon series on Minor Prophets brought us this week to Amos, whose memorable admonition–”Let justice roll on like a mighty river, and righteousness like a never-failing stream”–serves as an important reminder in any age (and perhaps most especially in our own). This was a message that I was eager to develop and deliver, partly because I feel that so many of the public issues which confront us these days are issues that have justice (or the lack thereof) at their core. Moreover, while I think that we Christians often do an admirable job of reminding people of various moral and ethical concerns in public policy debates; I fear that we sometimes fail to uphold the concern for justice that reverberates through much of our holy scriptures.
That having been said, this was also a difficult message to develop and deliver…mostly because I wanted to focus on the nature of and the importance of the biblical call to justice, and not to make it seem as though I as attempting to promote partisan viewpoints about contemporary issues. You’ll have to let me know how I did…
